Whereas April 9, 1865 marked the surrender of the largest Confederate field army and the effective end of the U.S. Civil War; and
Whereas the so-called Confederate States were both a rebel polity against and a mortal enemy of the United States; and
Whereas the de facto government of the so-called Confederate States was expressly formed upon ideas exactly opposite the founding ideals of the United States, and existed solely to perpetuate and expand the institution of chattel slavery; therefore
Be it resolved that we the undersigned do petition the federal government to name the ninth day of April a federal holiday set aside in recognition of the Slave Power's defeat and the triumph of the United States and liberty over its racist, slaveholding ideology.
