Between 1915 and 1923, the Armenian population was singled out, systematically deported, and then slaughtered by the thousands due to fierce Turkish nationalism and a desire to homogenize the population of the former Ottoman Empire. According to the overwhelming majority of genocide scholars, over 1 million Armenians perished. During his first presidential campaign, then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama promised to recognize the Armenian genocide. Sadly, his promise remains unfulfilled. Every April 24, the Armenian Martyrs’ Day, President Obama has addressed the Armenian genocide, but he approaches the issue with a grammatical aversion to the word “genocide.” Therefore, Mr. President, I implore you on April 24, 2012, to follow through on your promise and recognize the Armenian genocide as such.
