In 1993, Captain Charles Moore discovered what is now called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. This patch is 7 million square miles wide and threatens ocean biology, and in the long term, our lives (Nationalgeographic.com).
At a TED conference in 2012 (TED is a non-profit organization that allows individuals to share new or influential ideas), a dutch engineering student announced a plan to divert the contents of the plastic patch into collection sites. This method does not disturb wildlife, running costs equal zero, and would collect about 7.25 million tonnes of plastic in the span of 5 years (TED.com).
The cleanup of an entire section of ocean has been too daunting for any entity to claim responsibility, until now. Now is the time to act.
