Along with the 4th of July, Juneteenth completes the cycle of freedom for American Independence Observance. Americans of all colors, creeds, cultures, religions, and countries of origin, share in a common love of and respect for freedom.
June 19, 1865, is recognized as the date when freedom was announced to some of the last slaves in America by General Gordon Granger, in Galveston, Texas who issued General Order #3. This was 2 1/2 years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which only applied to states which seceded from the Union.
We are asking for acknowledgment of the full spectrum of African Americans achievements and accomplishments since June 19,1865.
