This ruling was made after Richard and Mildred Loving - a white man and black woman - were arrested on felony charges of getting married. The court's affirmation of one's constitutional right to love was used decades later as one of the precedents for the eventual legalization of gay marriage.
Loving Day is celebrated as an unofficial holiday on June 12th, the anniversary of this court ruling. The Orlando tragedy - where dozens of innocent LGBT lives were slaughtered - had occurred on that date this year. Please push for Loving Day to be recognized as an official holiday, one that celebrates not just the court ruling but also love that is defiant in the face of hate.
