Luigi Del Bianco, an Italian sculptor, was chosen by Mount Rushmore designer Gutzon Borglum to be the chief stone carver on Mount Rushmore.
Without Del Bianco's work on the faces of the presidents, they would be, at best, indistinguishable from each other, and at worst, monstrosities. HOWEVER, HIS NAME IS SIMPLY LISTED WITH ABOUT 400 OTHER STONE CARVERS on a plaque dedicated to the men who worked on Mount Rushmore. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT HE WAS THE PRINCIPAL CARVER, AND TRAINED THE OTHER CARVERS (none of whom were sculptors).
