The State of Somaliland, which makes up what was previously British Somaliland, has been a de facto independent state since 1993. It has a functioning government, with its own services and currency. Yet no country recognizes it, and instead see it as part of Somalia. Somalia is as nations go, is as about as real as Atlantis. The government is unable to stop the anarchy that is gripping the nation, and most Somalis are barely aware of its existence. If the US takes steps to recognize Somaliland, the US can gain a valuable partner in a middle east that unlike other "friends", is not a Sharia motivated monarchy. The people of Somaliland and the United States can both benefit greatly, with the US sorly needing friends in Africa, a Continent that has more nations friendly to China than the US
