Recognize native Puerto Ricans, with indigenous (Taino) blood, as Native Americans according to a mtDNA genetic study. The study which was carried out between 2010-2012 by the University of Pennsylvania, National Geographic Society and the Liga Guakia Taina ke (Our Taino Land) a non-profit 501 organization based in Puerto Rico. Results from the study reflects that over 65 percent of participants have Indigenous (Taino). According to the Federal Blood Quantum Law (the degree of ancestry for an individual of a specific racial or ethnic group), our community qualifies for Federal Recognition as an “Indigenous Base Community”.
