Carmen Ortiz is the US Attorney for the District of Massachusetts. She is an all too rare example of a minority woman finding success in the legal profession, and of a prosecutor who has successfully attacked public corruption.
Recently, there has been an online populist witchhunt blaming her for the suicide of one of her office's criminal defendants, Aaron Swartz. Any such death is of course tragic. But there was no impropriety in the charges that the US brought or the settlement it offered.
Some "hacker" activists, with little perspective of the economics of the situation, have called the attempted crime "victimless." This is a misguided label for an incomplete criminal attempt stopped by authorities. The criminal attempt, had it succeeded, would not have been victimless.
