Somalia has been in turmoil since the beginning of the civil war. Most of Somalia has descended into chaos as the federal government and Al Shabab, along with several other groups, ravage the country to try and win the war. This has left the majority of Somalia in complete disarray due to the immoral practices of these powers. In the Northwest of the country lies a democratic republic, Somaliland, that has mostly stayed out of the war. Somaliland, unlike the other factions competing for control of the country. has not expressed intent on taking the entirety of the country, nor have they committed terrible atrocities. If the Obama administration recognized the republic and advocated for two Somalias, Somaliland and the rest of Somalia, in the future other nations may also.
