recognize same-sex marriages which were legally solemnized in any state.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of same-sex marriages were performed after the state law or constitutional provision banning them was held unconstitutional and before a court stayed further marriages in Indiana, Utah, Colorado, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arkansas. Now many are denied the basic right to take the last name of their spouse. This right and others flow from recognition by the Social Security Administration. Our firm, on our clients' behalf, has written the Social Security interim administrator, Ms. Carolyn Colvin, and has not received a response. We are aware that a similar request to Attorney General Holder has been made. Our clients were informed that the Social Security Administration will take the application for name change but will not act upon it at this time.
