The autonomous region of Somalia known as Somaliland has had an independent federal government since 1991. It has had multiple peaceful exchanges of power in that time. Somaliland is a model democracy in the horn of Africa and the only thing holding it back is the lack of recognition from foreign powers. If the United States were to lead the way in this it would set an example for other primarily Muslim democracies and earn us a loyal ally in an unstable region.
