Those with naturally occurring red hair make up only 1-2% of the world population. They are often called Caucasians but are are distinctly different from their peers. Their skin is lighter, lacks the dark pigment eumelanin, and is covered in ephelis (freckles). Their hair is a distinct redish hue.
The genetic mutation that causes red hair also causes unwanted side effects. There is an increased sensitivity to sunlight which increases the risk for Melanoma. Studies have also shown a difference in pain tolerance.
Those with naturally occurring red hair face discrimination in their daily lives. From early childhood, they are taunted for being different. One example is "National Kick-a-Ginger Day" that was started on Facebook.
