Religious holidays in the school calendar are recognized nationwide in respect of observing the beliefs of others. Currently the main Christian and Jewish holidays are recognized nationwide, yet despite there being 3.5 million Muslims in the United States, the 2 main Islamic holidays (Eid-al-Fitr, Eid-al-Adha), are not recognized in the school calendar. This creates a dilemma on whether to let children attend school or take the school day off to participate in religious activities. We would like these 2 holidays to be recognized in the school calendar nationwide to promote religious equality & understanding for all citizens of the U.S.
