Since its completion in 1941, the original purpose of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial -- to commemorate the roles of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt in the creation, preservation and expansion of the United States -- has been superseded by the need for a more modern memorial to a higher purpose.
We the undersigned petition the White House to support, and direct the National Park Service to undertake (using only private voluntary donor funding), the project of replacing the four existing sculptures with the faces of four contemporary heroes of American liberty, namely:
- Chelsea Manning;
- Edward Snowden;
- Julian Assange; and
- Ross Ulbricht
