Congress should implement a reform of our Welfare system to eliminate wasteful Bureaucracy and government paternalism. A Universal Basic Income, equal to the poverty rate, would eliminate the need for all other welfare assistance, guarantee access to basic necessities for all citizens, and provide true freedom to each individual to pursue their passions and ambitions within the greater economy. This is affordable through consolidation of existing welfare schemes and social security and through simplification of the tax code to ensure that all Earned Income is taxable. This income would be enough to meet essential needs, such as food and shelter, but not so great as to deter incentives to work and improve one's economic well being.
