Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona had a Naval warship named in her honor in conflict with the Navy's naming conventions for this class of ship.
Littoral combat ships (LCS) are to be named for regionally-important U.S. cities and communities. Additionally, supply vessels, not warships, should be named after civilians if so honored.
Gabrielle Giffords has never served in the military, nor can be attributed to any monumental service to the Navy while in office. There are over 6,800 casualties from recent conflicts more deserving of the honor, or 50 states from which to choose a name.
Finally, naming a warship bristling with weapons after someone who is championing limitations on our 2nd Amendment right is inappropriate. The Sailors who will serve on board deserve better.
