alter the requirements for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to include extended repayment plans.

Created by N.F. on July 29, 2015

Public school teachers and other public service employees are currently eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness after 10 years of "qualifying payments." This petition seeks to alter the program so that all repayment plans are considered qualifying, including extended repayment plans.

For some of us, repayment under the income contingent or standard repayment plan is not feasible. No income contingent plan should ask a teacher to pay $800 a month simply because their spouse, who did not sign the loan debt agreement and therefore should not be on the hook for the payments, is doing well. Public service does not pay well, and our teachers should not be made to worry about their credit or stability due to a faulty program. Help make teaching a financially stable career!
