Currently the minimum age to purchase and possess alcohol as set forth by National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 as 21 years of age 3 years after attaining legal status as an adult. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 was passed by threatening states with a reduction in federal funding for highways which could be viewed as a mild form of extortion thus the argument can be made that it was passed through unconstitutional means. When other rights and liberties that are obtained upon reaching adulthood are taken into consideration, especially military service, not being able to drink seems unfair. Consultation with experts in human development would reveal that very little maturation takes place from the age of 18 through 21.
