After over 50 years since its initial implementation by President Eisenhower in 1958, the Cuban Embargo remains as an obvious holdover from the days of the Cold War.
The embargo must be reconsidered or removed outright based on the following:
1. The embargo is illegal based on the law which was used for its initial implementation, the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917, which requires that the United States be under an immediate threat for its use. Cuba no longer poses a threat to the United States.
2. Since 1992, the United Nations has annually voted in a strong majority against the embargo, with only a few nations against the vote each time.
3. It would benefit the Cuban people who suffer from lack of access to medical equipment (such as CT scanners) which are under a U.S. patent.
