On 8th Shawwal-al-Mukarram, Wednesday, in the year 1345 AH (April 21, 1925), mausoleums in Jannat-ul-Baqi (Medina) and Jannat-ul-Mualla (Mecca) were demolished by Ibn Saud. These cemeteries originated from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and he himself buried his relatives and companions there. The graveyard, in particular, is important to Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims throughout the world, as four of the twelve Imams (grandsons of the Prophet) and the daughter of the Prophet, Syeda Fatima Zahra (S.A) are buried there.
The graveyard over the past decades has also been a symbol of great injustice due to the destruction of the tombs on these cemeteries by the Wahhabis. There is also a strict restriction on visitors particularly Shi’ite visitors, from going anywhere close to the graves.
