There is a powerful corn lobby in Washington that provides corn growers with billions of dollars in subsidies every year. As a result, nearly all processed food have traces of corn products, like the infamous high fructose corn syrup, in them. These foods, including soda, tend to be unhealthy yet very cheap, while healthy fruits and vegetable are expensive, making it difficult for low income families to enjoy healthy meals. If corn subsidies were reduced and fruit and vegetable subsidies were increased, these families would more easily be able to eat healthy, drastically reducing rates of childhood obesity and healthcare costs to the country.
