Incarceration rate in the US is one of the highest in the world and very high compared to other western nations. The extreme difference with other Western Worlds implies a deficiency in the US imprisonment model that seems to be financially motivated by the privatization of the "prison industry" leading to excessive incarceration and lengthy prison terms for minor offenses. This needs investigation and mitigation, to avoid a portion of the population to be excluded from contributing to the economy, individual being impaired for life, while increase cost to society.
