The government has chosen to remain inactive regarding the issue of the student loan interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans doubling to a whopping 6.8 percent on July 1st, 2013. College is more costly than ever, and this increase could mean an extra $1,000 of interest during the life of the loan. With multiple loans, that extra cost continues to climb. This is money that could be spent boosting the economy, but instead students in debt will have no choice but to spend it paying back student loans. Students are going back to school in a month, and I believe it is past the appropriate time for the government to speak up and lend some support for America's future: our students pursuing higher education.
