During the 1990s soldiers were offered a separation bonus called the SSB. If an SSB recipient returned to military duty and retired he/she was required to repay the bonus. After 911, many SSB recipients were given an opportunity to return to duty in support of the war on terror - spending some of their final years deployed to very difficult places. The military is now taking up to 40 percent of their retirement pay.
Since the student loan repayment rate is now limited to 10 percent of the recipient’s income, it would only seem fair that SSB recipients be given this same consideration. While we understand that serving in college and serving in the military is not the same thing, we see no reason for the SSB repayment rate to be higher than the student loan repayment rate.
