Reduce Military Spending

In the face of a global recession, the Federal Government has made sweeping budget cuts to numerous agencies and programs. However, the United States continues to spend 40% of global arms expenditures, more than the next ten countries on the list combined. When the government shutdown and the ever-raising debt ceiling is taken into consideration, it is evident that more budget cuts and/or higher taxes are a necessity, and given our country's rampant spending on our military, it is the obvious first choice.
Some people may argue that this level of spending is a necessity because we are a large country that's globally prominent, however much larger countries (both geographically and population-wise) have achieved the same level of public security with significantly less spending.
