The current signature requirement for the end goal of petitions on We the People is 100,000, which was increased after the Death Star petition got through. While the requirement spike does serve to deter joke petitions, it also heavily hurts serious petitions that deserve due address and consiration.
The value of 50,000 is high enough to deter most joke petitions without crippling the serious ones as strongly as it does.
