Middle-class families have been severely harmed by the 2% increase in Social Security taxes on their wages. For many, this is a devastating hardship. Reducing the tax increase by 1% this year will help families slowly prepare and adjust budgets which will make the next increase easier to plan for. This still brings an increase of funding to Social Security but also gives families an easier adjustment period. Also, having more dollars in the hands of consumers will help stimulate the economy since consumers would feel encouraged to keep supporting business growth.
