After 40 years and 2.5 trillion dollars, the war on drugs has failed. The war is a war on Americans, with the majority of its budget used to arrest and imprison non-violent drug offenders. With 45% of our nation’s prisons projected to be overcrowded in 5 years & 50% of federal prisoners jailed on drug offenses, this war is breaking our finances & has turned us into the world's most heavily incarcerated country.
The majority of drug deaths today are caused by prescription drugs, not street drugs. We need to stop treating drug-abuse as a crime issue, but a health one.
Between our own citizens who smuggle guns into Mexico, & the banks that launder cartel money, this war is being subverted at all sides.
Something needs to change. Current drug policy needs to be carefully reevaluated.
