In 2008, California considered Proposition 8, a proposition that would ban gay marriage by the public's voice. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints raised over $20 million in support of that proposition. Letters were sent throughout churches to be read to congregations, and many church groups set specific fundraising goals.
More recently, the church has created a large shopping mall in downtown Salt Lake City, spending millions more on that than on any charitable expenses. As of yesterday, the church has released videos defending Utah liquor laws; these videos were aimed specifically at people outside of the religion.
As a Utahn, I have seen the LDS church act as a political organization and business. Please reconsider their tax-exempt status.
