We petition the administration to reexamine the current alcohol purchase and public possession age of 21.
An outright ban on purchasing alcohol for those under 21 exasperates the issue of underage drinking by making alcohol consumption a social taboo, and thus something teenagers will try just to break the rules. Furthermore, underage drinking is still a problem, with 70% of high school graduates having tried alcohol; the age of 21 is not helping. Moreover, those aged 18 to 20 are legal adults, and thus cannot be denied the right to purchase alcohol; this is age discrimination and illegal. Those in that age range can also join the military, purchase tobacco, sign contracts, and do all the other things adults are permitted to do; purchasing alcohol should not be restricted to them.
