Over the past couple of months, the price of oil has rapidly plummeted to new 5-year lows(1). The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR)'s inventory is currently 36 million barrels below capacity(2, 3). Now would seem to be an opportune time for the U.S. government to authorize the purchase of 36 million barrels of crude oil in order to replenish the SPR back to full capacity. This petition is a request to take such an action.
