In the United States, average citizens can literally purchase certification that would allow them to testify as expert witnesses in a court of law. This certification is all that is necessary to be considered an expert in a court of law. This system is so defunct that a HOUSE CAT was deemed an expert by a company known as the ACFEI. Our lack of proper credentialling has led to pseudo-experts testify in trials that they are not educated enough to present solid facts. Several people sit on death row as the result of falsified expert witness testimony. Also, expert witnesses are subject to bias depending on whether they were hired by the prosecution or the defense. To counteract these issues, experts should be contracted by judges and not by individual sides.
