Government Officials should be compensated, fairly, based on the actual work they do. Pay members of the House of Representatives and the Senate $35 per hour with medical insurance and 30 days of vacation per year (2.5 per month). Put pay incentives in place for those who do more than the basic number of days worked, for serving on special committees, and for charitable work.
Change Congressional "retirement" pay to reflect modern realities, a pension for those eligible that is a percentage of their pay based on the number of years served. Set a minimum number of terms served before retirement is an option. Most importantly, make these changes permanent, and do not give control of raises to them.
In short, pay Congress as every other American get paid, for services rendered.
