Reform Criminal Background Checks

Created by G.B. on November 11, 2015

I’m proposing that, after individuals have completed their sentences and demonstrated they are law-abiding citizens for 7 years (with the exception of sex crimes), their criminal records be sealed from potential employers’ view. This is similar to standards used in Europe and Canada. It ensures that employers judge candidates on who they are now, not on who they were in the distant past. At best it allows a person to maximize his potential as a productive citizen and human being. At the very least it allows him to find employment to support himself. It will create more people contributing to society as law abiding, taxpaying citizens, thus reducing recidivism and the prison population, all while making our communities safer.
