US District Attorneys have repeatedly sought harsh punishments for people suspected of minor or non-existent crimes. Aarron Swartz was facing felony charges for an act of civil-disobedience. Robert Ferrell and Steve Kurtz were facing similar charges (wire fraud) for an inconsequential violation of a private contract. These cases illustrate a culture of over-aggressive prosecution that extends beyond individual DAs and must be fixed. These prosecutions are ruining lives, threatening our freedom, and undermining trust in the justice system.
