The electoral college is necessary to the electoral process of our nation's executive branch, in its ability to reserve an appropriate amount of power for the smaller States of the Union. Though it has unfortunate consequences, such as candidates campaigning in only a handful of important swing-States and creating an unnecessary winner-loser aspect that poorly represents State populations. A simple solution that would preserve the power of the low-population States and ameliorate some of the systemic side effects of the electoral college would be to award electoral college votes to candidates based on the percentage of the vote that they receive in each state.
