Drug offenders currently make up the largest portion (48.4%) of the prison population. With 76.9% of released drug offenders being rearrested during a three-year period following his/ her release, we want to reduce the amount of people who return to federal prisons specifically for drug related offenses.
In order to accomplish this, we urge President Barack Obama to sign the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act (S.2123) into law, after it is passed in congress. The Bill would decrease the sentences served by drug offenders, repeal the "three strikes law”, and assign inmates to appropriate recidivism programs, such as drug rehabilitation, job training, and faith based programs, in order to equip them with the proper tools needed to become productive citizens upon release.
