The current immigration policies of the United States do not provide a method by which a permanent resident can sponsor their foreign-born same-sex partner.
According to a UCLA study, it was estimated that as of the 2000 U.S. Census, almost 36,000 same-sex bi-national couples existed in the U.S. More than one-third of same-sex male couples and 58% of same-sex female couples had children under the age of 18 in their homes.
This petition seeks to end the discrimination currently present in U.S. immigration policy that is tearing couples, and more importantly, families apart.
The U.S. is currently behind 16 other countries that have eliminated same-sex discrimination from immigration policy, including countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
