Many parents are unwilling or unable to pay for their child's education at all, even if they have a good relationship with them. This makes students who live on their own and struggling to support themselves in a difficult position.. They cannot receive need-based student aid and their parents will not help. We petition the Obama Administration to make financial independence a valid reason for dependency override for federal student aid so many more low income students can receive pell grants and other need-based aid.
