Reform patent laws that allows agribusiness to claim rights to crops pollinated by GMOs in adjacent fields

Created by R.S. on March 05, 2013

The Monsanto Corporation is backing farmers of all sizes into a corner with their stranglehold on intellectual property rights. As it stands, a farmer trying to grow non-GMO crops on their own land can be forced into bankruptcy and dispossession simply because their farm is down wind from a GMO plot. There is no reasonable action that can be taken by the non-GMO farmer to ensure their crop is free from the GMOs patented genes; and the only accommodation agribusiness is interested in is a substantial "use fee" to be paid by the farmer who had no intention of growing the GMO crop in the first place. An apt analogy would be if Time Warner were to blast its music catalog into the streets of New York then sue everyone walking by for an exorbitant "use fee".
