Reform the patent system

Created by R.C. on December 04, 2012

The patent system in our country today is badly broken, and it is stifling innovation, advances in health care, and economic growth. The most obvious example of this is how individual companies can patent genes that exist in nature, even human genes, such as the case that is now going to the Supreme Court where a company patented two genes that cause breast cancer and now are trying to prevent anyone else from doing research on them. Nearly as bad is the current situation in technology and computer software, where companies have filed vague patents on general concepts and then use them to sue other tech companies. This is killing innovation and economic growth; large tech companies are diverting more and more money into lawyers and patent fights. The system need major reforms.
