The prison system is currently based on punishing those who commit crimes. While punishment is useful, it does the prisoners no good, as many will come back with a repeated offense. Therefore, it is only reasonable that the prison system begin focusing on preventing repeated offense through some form of rehabilitation. Speaking of repeated offenses, the ACLU somewhat recently created a report about life sentences given for nonviolent crimes. I was appalled to see that people were given life sentences for crimes such as possessing an amount of Heroin too minute to be weighed, and repeated but nonviolent offenses such as drug possession. The latter portion of this is a clear violation of the 8th Amendment protection from cruel and unusual punishment, and must be dealt with.
