Law enforcement being allowed to harm or kill citizens with impunity from the justice system has become status quo. Over and over we are watching cases of civil rights violations from police, only to get handed off to a grand jury that results in them not getting indicted for even outright homicides committed wholly on camera. The justice system has become remarkably unworthy of trust.
This is resulting in an ever increasing, and deserved, cynicism and anger with regard to the justice system and police in general. While encouraging police body-cams is a good start, there must be continued progress making sure accountability leads to true justice. This petition proposes "straight to trial" indictment of police-involved maiming and killings of citizens using special, external prosecutors.
