The Selective Service System (SSS) requires all men ages 18-25 to register with the System to create a pool of potential military servicemen in the event of a draft. However, it still requires transgender women, even those who have undergone reassignment surgery. It also does not require transgender men to register. This stipulation delegitimizes transgender men and women, placing women in a Service that "continues to register only men," to use the rhetoric on the SSS website. It also discourages transgender men from being part of a system all men in the United States must join. While the gender division of Selective Service, and the moral implications of a draft altogether, are highly up to debate, if we keep the system we have now we must ensure the rights of our transgender citizens.
