On October 4, 2013, 15-year-old Christian Adamek hung himself to avoid potentially being listed on the sex offender registry after streaking at a high-school football game in Alabama.
Children all over the country are being convicted and registered as sex offenders at younger and younger ages. Their crimes range from normal childhood sexual exploration (games of "Doctor," etc.) to acting out abuse they are suffering on younger children to consensual sex between teenagers. The vast majority have not committed violent crimes.
2 decades of research has found juvenile sex offenders re-offend at very low rates, are amenable to treatment and suffer greatly due to misapplication of sex offender laws. 23% have attempted suicide.
Sex offender laws targeting children must be revised.
