The government made over $51 Billion in profit on the backs of students in 2013. Although publications such as Forbes site a loss on undergraduate loans, they still agree that the government will garnish over $10 Billion a year in profits from the student loan program, which the Huffington Post projected to yield over $127 Billion in profit in the next 10 years.
What this translates to is a system that is in dire need of reform. With over 1 Trillion in Student Loan Debt, the program is siphoning the lifeblood out of the American economy. In the era before the Obama reforms, banking industry abuses created a "life debt" for our youth. The legality of the system should be at the center of debate, past and present, as the government is generating a profit off of a taxpayer funded program.
