I believe that the way police departments conduct internal investigations is nothing but a fraud and a sham. It is an insult to the American people that the very people who infringe our civil liberties and abuse the citizenry are in charge of investigating and reprimanding those responsible. More often than not, reported police brutality goes unpunished, even in events where there is video evidence and witness testimony. Instead of an internal investigation, wherein suspect officers are given leave with full pay, essentially a paid vacation, and then return without even a mark on their record, we should have a citizen review board that can judge cases of police misconduct without bias in every town that there is a police department. This ensures that our men in uniform are held accountable
