President Obama rightly denounced the Senate for failing to pass the Manchin-Toomey amendment to put in place background checks for online gun purchases and private gun shows. The President, however, must stand by his convictions by refusing to campaign for or endorse the members of his own party who sold out to the gun lobby and opposed this vital reform. Senators Mark Begich and Mark Pryor (up for re-election in 2014), Heidi Heitkamp (2018), and Max Baucus (retiring) should receive the condemnation of the country and their party for this failure. The President should encourage primary voters in Alaska and Arkansas to pick real Democrats to represent them next year.
