In the event that the Italian government attempts the extradition of Amanda Knox, the U.S. government should reject all such requests by invoking Article X of the bilateral extradition treaty with Italy (Treaty Doc 98-20), on the grounds that -- based on the totality of the evidence and erratic, contradictory, and possibly politically-motivated rulings by Italian courts -- no reasonable basis exists to believe that the person sought committed the offense.
Precedent for such refusals already exists, as in the case of the U.S. refusing to extradite indicted CIA agents to Italy (2007).
Basic fairness and justice requires that any attempts by Italy to extradite Amanda Knox be politely but firmly refused.
